Dear fellow Rotarian: I am pleased to share the 2010-11 Rotary International and Rotary Foundation Annual Report. For the first time ever, we have developed a website for the report that incorporates video and other rich media not available in the print version.

Rotary’s annual report offers a firsthand look at how Rotarians are responding to a range of needs, with support from RI and its Foundation. The report also highlights the generosity of Rotarians to The Rotary Foundation and to Rotary’s top priority of global polio eradication. For those who want a more detailed look at Rotary finances, the audited financial statements are available for download.

Please share this link with others who may be interested in Rotary. You can also order print copies of the annual report at shop.rotary.org.

Having just completed six months as your new general secretary, I appreciate all that Rotary accomplished last year. New Meeting Place beginning Jan. 18

The El Dorado City Commission decided to close the restaurant at the Prairie Trails Golf Course. Our last meeting at Prairie Trails will be Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Starting January 18th, we will meet at the Welcome Center on the campus of Butler Community College.

Here are directions from Wichita.

Take K-254 to El Dorado. Continue on Central (K-254) past stoplights at Boyer and Village. Turn right at the third stoplight at Haverhill Road (Bank of America is on the NW corner). Continue south on Haverhill Road past the stoplight at Towanda. The campus will be on your right. Enter the east entrance off of Haverhill Road. The Welcome Center is a large two story building immediately on your right. Park on the west side of the building. Enter the lobby and go downstairs to the meeting rooms.

If you were at the District Conference you heard from Gemma Sisia, the remarkable young Australian woman who founded a free private school in Tanzania that now serves 1500 primary and secondary school children. If you missed out on the Conference you missed out on her story as well as lots of other great presentations.

Who knew fundraising could be so much fun! Our friends in the Wichita area won't want to miss this opportunity to help the hungry by attending SHOP FOR SURVIVAL. Pink Saloon, Beau Monde Beauty Bar and Aspen Boutique are banding together and offering a benefit shopping experience Saturday, September 24 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at their stores at Douglas and Oliver in Wichita. Several other retailers in the area will be involved with a percentage of all sales going to Numana to alleviate hunger in the Horn of Africa.

SMITH FEATURED SPEAKER AT TORNADO MEMORIAL SERVICE

Mike Smith, meteorologist at Weather Data Inc. in Wichita will be the featured speaker at the tornado memorial service in El Dorado on Friday, June 10, 2011. The service will mark the 53rd anniversary of the June 10, 1958 El Dorado tornado that claimed thirteen lives. The memorial service will be held in El Dorado's Graham Park at 5:45 P.M., the approximate time that the tornado passed through the park in 1958.

In 2007, the El Dorado Rotary Club spearheaded a community-wide effort that created the memorial. It was dedicated on June 10, 2008, the 50th anniversary of the tornado. The memorial features a bending pedestal representing the community that was bent but not broken by the tornado. The wind harp with thirteen strings represents the tornado victims. Each year, a memorial service is held on the tornado's anniversary.

Since the memorial dedication in 2008, educational plaques have been added giving more information about the storm and its aftermath. This year another plaque will be unveiled that pays tribute to the communities of Greensburg and El Dorado. Robert Dixson and Tom McKibban, respective mayors of the two towns will be present.

Following the 1958 El Dorado tornado, members of the Greensburg Calvary Mennonite Church were part of the relief effort. After the 2007 Greensburg tornado, an El Dorado public utilities crew helped to restore the water supply in Greensburg. In the fine Kansas tradition, each community helped the other community during their time of need.

The public is invited to attend the memorial service. The service should last about 20-25 minutes. A fellowship among the tornado survivors and families and friends of the tornado victims will conclude the memorial service.

We have a modification to Senator Moran’s visit June 1. Please come to the Civic Center at 11:45AM and not 11:00AM. The Senator is touring Numana and will not finish until 11:30. He will head to the Civic Center thereafter. The food will be served around noon. I will begin the meeting around 12:20. The Senator will begin his talk at 12:30. The talk will be part of his scheduled town hall, so there will probably be some non-Rotarians in the room. Think of it as a recruitment time.

Again, please come to the Civic Center at 11:45AM on Wednesday.

Sesquicentennial Anniversary
of the Civil War
Don Koke

Don and Andy Koke will mix songs of the Civil War with narrative read by El Dorado poet Ted Farmer from his new publication Jon Peter: Volunteer in the Civil War which chronicles the adventures of an Iowa farm lad who enlists in the Union Army. He fights in the first major battle of the Civil War west of the Mississippi at Wilson Creek near Springfield, Missouri, and afterwards settles in Butler County, Kansas.

And: Saturday, May 21: Grandview Elementary Street - Map Painting Project!

To El Dorado Rotarians:

We have a couple opportunities for community service in the coming weeks. First is this Saturday, May 21 at Grandview Elementary School. We will be painting a playground map of the USA on the playground. I brought this idea to the board last month and was instructed to gather more info. We also set a tentative date of May 21 for the project. After consulting with the people behind the maps (District 5690 officials), I was told the kit was in Western KS and probably not available until June at the earliest. As fate and high winds would have it, the kit became available earlier than expected. I found out on Friday, May 15, so we’re a go.

We need 10-12 volunteers. It was made abundantly clear to me more than 12 volunteers is too many and people will be standing around. If you would like to volunteer, please fire me an email. If we have more than 12, we can always take some people to the bike path and perform a spring clean-up.

I am picking up the kit on Tuesday PM and am told an experienced map painter will assist us on the 21st. Start time of 8:00 AM on Saturday, May 21. We are looking at 3-4 hours to get it done. For an idea of the project, see the attached picture.

The second opportunity is the Storm the Dam Trail Run on Saturday, June 11. We have been asked to man an aid station on the route. We need 3-4 volunteers from 6:30-10:30AM. I’ll be one, would love for 2-3 others to volunteer. I think we could easily man two stations with 8 people. The event involves a 5K (3.12 miles), 10K (6.25 miles) and half-marathon (13.1 miles). If you have never been a part of an event like this, there is little down time once the first runners reach your station.

I will be the lead guy for one station—if we have enough people, I’ll need another lead for the other station. More info on this one to come in the coming weeks.

I’ll speak about the playground map in more detail Wednesday. See you all then--

Final Polio Walk, El Dorado

Dear Rotarians,

The El Dorado Rotary Club held a successful Polio Walk on Saturday. Thirteen members including Kristy Randall, Micaela Ayers, David Coryell, Kurt Bookout, Brenda Burk, Tom Boren, Matt Rehder, Bret Koontz, Charley Greene, David Stewart, Caleb McNary, Harry Fitzgerald and myself participated in the event. Counting family and friends, about 35 people participated in the Polio Walk and the pizza lunch afterwards.

A reminder to the club members, that there will be NO REGULAR WEDNESDAY MEETING this week. For those of you who still have polio donations to turn in, please bring them to the next meeting on Wednesday, May 11th. You may also mail your Polio contribution to the El Dorado Rotary Club, P.O. Box 255, El Dorado, KS 67042.

To date, the club has raised $850.00 and we hope to pass the $1,000.00 mark. Enclosed is a group picture of the participants. Julie Clements of the El Dorado Times covered the event. An article in the newspaper will appear this week. Thanks again for your support of the End Polio Now Campaign.

I. Treasurer’s Report
(sent via email) Nothing much new to report. The income statement and balance sheet through January 31, 2011 are attached. We are still a little behind on the budget as we await the remainder of the 3rd quarter dues to be collected.

II. RF Walk – Date: Saturday April 30

Place: Start at parking lot northwest of Main St. Bridge (like last year)

ROTARY FOUNDATION REPORT:

The Rotary Foundation fundraiser will begin this week. Micaela will be selling chances for me. You receive one chance for a $10.00 donation. More chances can be obtained with each additional $5.00 donation. Chances can be purchased at the next three meetings. The prize is a picture collage of the Tornado Memorial similar to the one that Herb Llewellyn won last year. It is on display in the lobby of City Hall. The winning name will be drawn by a member of the visiting GSE team at the end of the Feb. 23rd meeting. The member does not have to be present to win.

Foundation giving for the current Rotary year as of today has now passed the $3,500.00 mark. We have 11 Sustaining Members so far ($100.00 minimum donation). Several more are on pace to reach that level by the end of the Rotary year on June 30th. The fundraiser is an opportunity for the 18 members who have not contributed to the Foundation so far this Rotary year to offer their support. Thanks to everyone for their generous support of the Rotary Foundation this year.

I have tentatively scheduled the Polio Plus Walk for Saturday, April 30th. This will be the third and final walk in a three-year campaign. Rotarians worldwide have raised over $159 million toward the $200 million matching challenge goal set by the Bill Gates Foundation who will contribute $255 million. Rather than trying to do another family picnic, I suggest that we use the same course as last year and finish with a pizza lunch at the North Main Pizza Hut . We would start at the North Main Park at 10:30 A.M. and walk a round trip on the Bike Path along the West Branch of the Walnut River. We would then finish with a lunch at Pizza Hut for all the participants during the noon hour. The club would pick up the tab (Approximately $125). If this is acceptable with the board, I will make reservations at Pizza Hut. So someone will need to make a motion.

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS:
The Club Visitation to the Newton Rotary Club was snowed out last week. We have rescheduled the visitation to Tuesday evening, March 1, 2011. We will car pool leaving El Dorado around 5:30 P.M. for the 6:30 P.M. dinner meeting in Newton. We will have a sign up sheet available as the day draws closer.

The annual Memorial Service at the Tornado Memorial is scheduled for 5:45 P.M. Friday, June 10, 2011 at the memorial site in Graham Park. Meteorologist Mike Smith will be the featured speaker. The club will dedicate a plaque paying tribute to the communities of El Dorado and Greensburg. The two towns assisted each other in their recovery efforts following the 1958 El Dorado tornado and the 2007 Greensburg tornado. Mayor Bob Dixson of Greensburg has recently accepted an invitation to attend the service.

Packaging Event

Numana will be hosting a packaging event on March 19, at the Butler Community College Gymnasium, 500 building, from 9 AM to 5 PM. People of all ages and all communities are invited to attend and participate in a practical way to help those affected by the disaster.

ROTARY Double Recognition Extended through 2/24/11

Due to the enthusiastic support of Rotarians, The Rotary Foundation will extend the double Paul Harris Fellow recognition incentive to the end of the day on 24 February (23:59 in your local time zone). The incentive is for online contributions of US$100 or more to the Annual Programs Fund.

Thank you to all Rotarians who celebrated Rotary's 106th birthday with a generous online contribution to the Annual Programs Fund. The double Paul Harris Fellow recognition promotion has been an overwhelming success. Our program this Wednesday noon is the Group Study Exchange team that visited Denmark last year. This is an amazing program that partners a Rotary team leader with non-Rotarians to travel overseas to learn and share with Rotarians in industries and companies throughout an area. Numana Update for Haiti

Friends,

I hardly ever send out one of my writings since I blog a lot, but we have developed a new partnership with Cross International of Florida who are doing amazing work in creatively "rescuing" children slaves in Haiti. There is no way on earth to rescue them all by taking them away from their owners because their are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of them, but we now have over 550,000 Numana meals in the pipeline to help in a creative new way to rescue a restavik!

Here's the story:

"Is she saying what I think she's saying?" I asked my Haitian interpreter as a young mother tried to move her shy, seven-year-old daughter out from behind her hip.

"Yes," he replied, "She wants to know if you want to take her daughter?"

"But she doesn't even know me?" I replied in disbelief. "She has no idea if I'm a good guy or not!"

"It doesn't matter," the interpreter said, "she just can't take care of her."

"How could a mother offer up a beautiful young daughter to a complete stranger?" I asked through my American experience of always being able to feed my children. Always. Never once have my kids known hunger because Dad couldn't buy food.

"Because she loves her." My interpreter, a Haitian native who was gracious, but somewhat indignant that I didn't understand what millions of parents go through. "This little girl hasn't eaten for a couple of days and the mom's heart can't take listening to her cry herself to sleep anymore and you look rich like you could feed her. The mom just loves her and wants her to eat."

I have no idea what it is like to hear my children cry themselves to sleep because of being hungry. None.

This mom, like millions of other parents, faces that grueling dilemma every day of the year: Will I feed my children? We, in America, ask the question, "What do I feed my children?" but almost never, "Will I feed my children?"

I gave the mom some money which, I know, will be used wisely but quickly gone. And there is always the haunting reality that I've only fixed it for a little bit.

"What will happen to that little girl?" I asked my interpreter as we left. "I would love to adopt her - my family would be so good for her - but I know adoption is almost impossible."

He hung his head and said quietly, "Restavik."

"What's a restavik?" I asked. I had heard but I wanted his explanation.

"A slave," he responded, still looking at the ground. "She will go with a family just a little bit better off than hers, and there she will have a place to sleep and she'll have to take care of the family. They'll feed her every couple of days. But she won't go to school."

Such is the life of a restavik in Haiti. Even before the earthquake there were an estimated 250,000 children slaves in Port-au-Prince alone! They are often children who are given to another more affluent family who provides shelter and minimal food. This is not only acceptable, it is expected in Haiti culture. But these children are then treated like slaves. They are not educated, they are barely fed, they are often molested, and frequently abused.

For anyone wanting to help, the first dilemma they face is that child-slavery is an accepted part of the Haitian society so it is not a moral issue of right or wrong. Owning a child slave is just normal. And if you own that child and they run off before they're 16, all you have to do is sic the police after them. Hmm, so I can get the cops to go after my slave? See what I mean? It's part of the norm.

The other dilemma is this: What are you going to do with them if you do get them? Adoption is nearly impossible and orphanages are filled to the brim.

The answer is: Give them an education!

I am currently in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, much to my Kansas staff's chagrin (since they are buried in a foot of snow while I bask in the shade of a palm tree!). I came to visit Cross International with whom we are starting to partner in sending our Numana food to restaviks! In fact, the first container of food that we sent them is going to a part of Haiti where they educate restaviks in 29 schools.

This is the way it works: Because the slave owner does not want to actually be responsible for feeding the child, they will send them to afternoon schools that Cross supports because they know the children will be fed. And, while they're there, the children will learn to read and write so when they finally do hit 16 years old and are free to leave their slave-owners, they will have an education. Since 54% of Haitians cannot read or write, a strategy like this is brilliant in the long-term help of Haiti. As I've mentioned before, when you think about helping Haiti, you have to think in terms of decades. Truly, the best way to help Haiti long-term is to educate children and the best way to get kids to school is to feed them.

Numana food does more than feed a tummy, it feeds a future.

Dear Polio Eradication Champions,

Polio Eradication was highly visible in the news this week with our number one Polio Eradication Champion, Bill Gates, leading the PR effort. Mr Gates released his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Annual Letter and appeared at a press conference with many of the world's top Polio experts and Rotary's Polio Eradication Leaders, including $200 Mil Challenge Chair John Germ, PolioPlus Chair Dr. Bob Scott & Rotary's General Secretary Ed Futa. Mr. Gates is perfectly aligned with Rotarians everywhere insisting that total eradication is possible and we will not stop until we reach our goal!

Rotary and Friends Feed Haiti this month

Dear Club Presidents, Secretaries, Assistant Governors and District Leaders:

The Rotary Club of El Dorado and Rotary District 5690 are proud to announce participation in a service project phenomenon developed by one of their own, Rick McNary. Mark your calendars now for Wednesday, December 29th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for “Rotary and Friends Feed Haiti,” hosted by the El Dorado Rotary Club and District 5690 with Numana, Inc. at the El Dorado Civic Center.

Rotarians, friends and families of District 5690 will gather together on the 29th to package a container of food -- 261,000 meals -- to send to the Cap-Haitien Rotarians for distribution in Lambert, Haiti, near the north coast. This is the same area clubs have supported with contributions of sun ovens, a solar powered water well, computers, bicycles, etc.

Numana, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) international hunger relief organization whose mission is to empower people to save the starving. Since its first packaging event on December 29, 2009, exactly one year prior to the upcoming packaging event, Numana has mobilized over 120,000 volunteers coast-to-coast and packaged and sent over 20 million meals to disaster victims in Haiti.

This event is the perfect venue to invite your family and friends and potential new members to experience the camaraderie enjoyed by club membership. A Numana event is a festive hands-on opportunity to roll up your sleeves and feed the hungry. Children and adults of all ages enjoy assembling the soy, beans, rice and vitamins into bags and preparing them for shipping. Participants are deeply changed by spending just a few hours to save starving people.

Additionally, a canned food drive to benefit local food pantries will occur simultaneously on the 29th. Please remember to bring canned goods and encourage others to do so as well.

Numana and District 5690 will share fundraising responsibility of approximately $80,000 for the food and shipping. Promotional materials and information to aid in raising the awareness of the event and our District 5690’s leadership are being developed by Numana and will be sent via e-mail and postal mail to distribute to your members. Steve's Football Challenge gets shared...

Here's a great idea from the Rotary Club of El Dorado (courtesy of club Foundation Chair Steve Pershall) that you might want to try this year. Time is short - so make it happen soon.

Dear Rotarians,

Our Rotary Club will be conducting our 4th annual K.U. and K-State Football Challenge this fall. The Football Challenge was initiated in 2007. The Jayhawks were victorious in 2007 and 2008. The Wildcats won last year and will be seeking to tie up the series at 2-2.

Here is how the Challenge works. Members sign up for their favorite team. The game will be played in Lawrence on Thursday, October 14th. Each member of the losing team will contribute $10.00 to the Rotary Foundation account of a member of the winning team. It has become a fun event for our club with bragging rights for another year going to the winning team and the proceeds going to the Rotary Foundation (Annual Programs Fund).

The sign-up sheet will be available at this week's Rotary meeting. If you can not attend this week, you can send me an email with the name of your favorite team. You do not have to be a K.U. or K-State alum in order to participate. My goal this year is to raise at least $150.00. This would require at least 15 Rotarians to sign up for each team. The Wildcats are so far undefeated but this will be their first road game of the year. So it should be an exciting, close game.

So pick your favorite team in the Sunflower Showdown and support your Rotary Foundation in the process.

I made an unfortunate misspelling on the Rotary newsletter I send each Monday. Maybe it was the holiday, or maybe because I was so focused on the fact that it was now Tuesday and Rotary of El Dorado meets on Wednesday, therefore, tomorrow. So I sent the subject line "Ratary Meets Tomorrow". Of course, there's no way to recall an email!

Rotary meets tomorrow, Sept. 8, to discuss the School Bond Issue for USD 490. From the news release:

Bond issue to be placed on November 2nd ballot

The USD 490 Board of Education approved a resolution to place a $36,105,000 bond issue on the November 2, 2010 ballot to build a new middle school on a new site and a new Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5 elementary school on the Skelly site. The cost of construction is $35.51 million. The cost of issuance of the bonds and capitalized interest is estimated at $595,000. The request by the district for allocation of Qualified School Construction Bonds (federal stimulus funds) was recently approved by Kansas State Department of Education. The approved allocation is for $12,500,000. It is estimated that Qualified School Construction Bonds would save district taxpayers $3.725 million in financing over the life of the bonds.

This is a reminder that the El Dorado Rotary Club will bestow a Paul Harris Fellowship on Bernadette (Bernie) Spradling at Wednesday's Rotary meeting. Bernie is the first female member in our club history to receive this honor.

Making the official presentation will be Past District Governor Geri Appel. Geri was the first female President of the Wichita Rotary Club and the first female District Governor of Rotary District #5690. She is currently the Rotary Foundation Chair for District #5690.

A request from Jean Shodorf’s representative to have Jean visit Rotary was presented and our policy is to not have candidates running for office speak at Rotary meetings. Bernie will notify them of this.

Steve reported that the Tornado Memorial rememberance program will take place June 10 at 5:45 pm. All Rotarians are encouraged to attend. Dave will follow up with Dana Korki and Dan Hill to see what needs to be completed at the work party on Saturday, June 5. Dana provided a sign-up sheet for the work party at the Rotary meeting. Should it be pouring rain at the time of the program, it will be cancelled. Slight rain—bring your umbrella! Steve mentioned that two plaques would be added this year. One plaque will commemorate the damage to Skelly school and the other commemorating the work provided by staff of Susan B. Allen Hospital. He also mentioned that he was thinking the next plaque should be commemorating the work done by “neighbors helping neighbors” in which other communities responded with all forms of help.

Bret shared a request from the president of the El Dorado Rotary Club of Bogotá, Columbia SA in which he stated he would like to visit the El Dorado Rotary Clubs in the US.

Matt reported that Kristy Randall would be taking Travis Griffin’s position on the board next year.

D.G. Dave Nygaard will be visiting El Dorado Rotary on July 28.

Matt and Mary will plan on attending the District Conference Aug 13, 14 and 15. Other Rotarians are invited to attend.

Sue Givens introduced Miles Harvey who presented his request for Rotary to sponsor the Social Smarts program for Lincoln school for the next school year. This program is geared toward students of various ages. The program stresses good manners and proper etiquette. It comes with curriculum for the instructor, student activities and parent’s guide. This program would be taught in the student’s homeroom for an estimated 45 minutes per week over an 8-10 week period. A Rotary member from Redmond, WA developed it. The cost of the program is $6 per student for materials, which would be about $1,104. The teaching materials would be around $1,367 making the total requested $2,471. The board discussed the program and will look at funding options and then get back with Miles.

Steve reported on the Polio Walk. He thinks we will raise between $600 and $700. There were thirty people walking and nine were Rotarians.

Board members reviewed the applicants for the Junior Rotarian scholarship. Ashley Jo Leckliter was selected to be the first Clifford Stone Memorial Scholarship winner. The scholarship will be presented to her at the May 12 Rotary meeting when we pay tribute to Cliff.

Bernie reported that it has been difficult to find RYLA prospects because of the date of the RYLA camp. The high school counselor is still trying to fine two students who can attend.

Bret shared a request from the Bradford Memorial Library for a donation to help with the summer reading program. Travis moved and Kurt seconded to donate $100 for the program. The motion was approved.

David Stewart reported that we would have a clean up at the Tornado Memorial on June 5.

Polio Walk a Success!

Dear Rotarians,

About 30 Rotarians, family members and friends participated in the second annual Polio Benefit Walk for the El Dorado Rotary Club. The Walk commenced at the North Main Park and followed the Bike Path along the West Branch of the Walnut River. After the walk, the participants enjoyed a pizza lunch provided by the club. The picture shows the walkers who were present at the start of the event.

Rotarians participating in the event included Club President Brent Koontz, Matt Rehder, Steve Pershall, Don Koke, Dave Stewart, John Prigmore, Morgan Metcalf, Dana Korkki and Micaela Ayers. David Yoder of Newton, Assistant Governor of Rotary District #5690, was a special guest walker. Other walkers included family members of a deceased polio victim.

The Benefit Walk raised funds for the Rotary International End Polio Now campaign which seeks to eradicate polio worldwide. Preliminary numbers indicated that over $500 was raised by the Benefit Walk. Final numbers will be tabulated later in the week. All money raised is being matched by the Bill Gates Foundation which is partnering with Rotary International in this campaign.

Steve gave the treasurer’s report. It was decided to make a $100 donation to SCARF.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) was discussed. It was decided to pay half of the $260 registration for two El Dorado high school students.

April 20, 2010 is our club’s 90th anniversary. Bernie has checked the RI website and has ordered two DVD’s. One tells the Rotary story and the other is a free DVD about the Polio Plus program.

We discussed the importance of monthly program committee chairs to communicate their list of programs with Matt so it can be published in the Bullwheel.

The 2nd annual Polio Plus Walk will take place May 1. It will begin at 10:30 at North Main Park. Red Devils will cook and a picnic for all walkers and their families will follow the walk. Steve encouraged members to secure pledges from others in the community. Bring your spouse, children and grandchildren and enjoy the fun.

A bike path cleanup will take place on April 24.

It was decided to name the high school Junior Rotarian scholarship the “Cliff Stone Rotary Scholarship”. We will present the scholarship on May 26 when we have a special program about Cliff presented by Ray Connell.

Steve reported that there would be a memorial service on June 10, at 5:45 at the Tornado Memorial. He is hopeful that two new plaques will be unveiled.

Greetings to my fellow Rotary Club members from the fabulous Rotary Club of Las Vegas West.

Why is this club so fabulous all of a sudden? Well, it isn't that recent. We've always been fabulous.

But we're even more talked about these days because of our club's new fundraising effort.

We call the fundraiser It's Vegas, Baby.

2010 Polio Benefit Walk and Family Picnic

Dear Members,

The El Dorado Rotary Club will hold its second annual Polio Benefit Walk and Family Picnic on Saturday, May 1, 2010. This year, the Polio Walk will start at 10:30 A.M. at the North Main Park, 900 N Main. The course will cross the recently renovated North Main bridge and follow the Bike Path along the West Branch of the Walnut River. The turnaround point will be just short of the Burlington Northern railroad bridge on East Central.. Construction work on the railroad bridge has caused us to change the course this year.

Members are urged to collect pledges from the general public. Once again, the money raised will be matched by the Bill Gates Foundation. Mr. Gates has pledged $355 million to the End Polio Now campaign if the local Rotary Clubs raise a cumulative total of $200 million by 2012. Last year, our club raised $1,616.00 in our inaugural walk. It will be a challenge to match last year's total but every dollar raised brings us one step closer to the worldwide eradication of polio.

Members are encouraged to bring their spouses, children and grandchildren. A large crowd will bring more public awareness to this worthy cause. After the walk has concluded, we will meet back at the North Main Park for the family picnic. The Red Devil Chefs will be serving hot dogs and hamburgers with all the other fixings provided by the club. The picnic will start shortly before noon and the event should wrap up by 1:00 P.M. There is no cost to attend the picnic.

Pledge sheets will be available at the upcoming Rotary meetings. A map of the bike path and the Polio Walk course is enclosed. Please plan on participating in the Polio Benefit Walk and Family Picnic on Saturday, May 1st. Hope to see everybody there.
