A Spiffy 60?

HOW BIG IS YOUR ROTARY CLUB?
How many times have you asked or been asked “How big is your
Rotary Club?”
The answers we hear are “we’re a medium size club, about 45
members”, or “we’re a small club, about 25 members” or
something similar. I’d be willing to bet that almost all of these
answers would be the same if they were asked 5 years before, or
5 years in the future.
Most of us have a subconscious idea of how big our Rotary club
is. We get to be comfortable with the size of our club and don’t
worry too much about membership until we drop below that
mental “size” that we’re used to. When we lose a few members,
we get uncomfortable with the trend and we get busy to recruit
some replacements. When we get back up to the “size” that our
Rotary club is, we tend to rest on our laurels. We feel comfortable
again tat we’ve got our Rotary club back up to its traditional size.
We can rest now, we’re back to our “normal size”.
I believe that we need to start looking at our Rotary club with a
different perspective. Don Ferrell , district 5790 membership chair
took a look at his 35 member club. They’d been thirty five for a
long time and they were comfortable with it. Don saw good
business leaders in the community that were not Rotarians, and
he saw a need in the club for more skills, ideas, and energy. He
introduced an idea to his members that gradually changed their
mindset. He asked the club if “Wouldn’t Fifty be Nifty?” It took
a while, but after sometime, Don’s club members started to think
of their Rotary club as a Fifty member club. You probably won’t
be surprised to hear that Don’s club met its goal and grew to their
goal of 50 members. Nifty! Now it’s time to start thinking about
how big don’s club really is. Wouldn’t 60 be spiffy, or wouldn’t 70
be spectacular.
Take a look at your Rotary club. I have a feeling that you’re a
member of a lot bigger club than your membership count shows.
Are you a 40 member club trapped in a 25 member mindset?
Your community has some outstanding, qualified Rotary member
prospects that could help your club. You could give them the gift
of Rotary, and the fun and energy of your club would increase. If
your members start to think of their club as a bigger club, they’ll
find a way to get to that size.
