Merry Christmas, Rotarians! We will be meeting this Thursday with Kiwanis at the country club. No Rotary Wednesday. Hope you can join us as we celebrate and have our final meeting for the year. If you did not sign up last week and would like to eat, please let me know. Our first meeting in January will be at the BCC library. The week following that will be at the new Flinthills Services and the third week we will meet at Double D's. My wish for each of you in 2010 is a year filled with happiness and good health. Happy Monday to each of you! Do you have your Christmas shopping done? Only 17 days--better get busy! Please join us this week when we welcome our newest member, Trisha Powell. We plan to get you into the holiday mood by having the El Dorado High School Encore perform for you. Also, you will want to bring your checkbook since we have a great seasonal item for our Foundation auction. Please remember that we don't meet next Wednesday Dec.16. We will meet on Thursday, Dec. 17 with Kiwanis. If you are not at the meeting this week and plan to attend Dec. 17, please let me know so I can add you to the meal count. We need to give the CC a number. Please be thinking about someone for secretary for next year. I would like to retire and would be happy to train and also act as a sub. Dear Rotarians, At the conclusion of the Rotary meeting today, a winning name was drawn in our Rotary Foundation fundraiser. Herb Llewellyn was the lucky winner in the drawing of the picture collage of the Tornado Memorial. As City Manager, Herb has agreed to display the pictures at the City Building so that the entire community can enjoy viewing it. My thanks go out to the 32 members who participated in the Fundraiser. $548.00 was raised for the Rotary Foundation. Dear Rotarians, Thank you to the 23 Rotarians who have contributed at least $10.00 to the Rotary Foundation fundraiser so far. Their names have been placed in a drawing to receive a beautifully framed picture collage of the Rotary Tornado Memorial that was dedicated last year. Keith Anderson, father of Sue Williams and father-in-law of Kent Williams, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2009. The funeral will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 2, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson. Following will be a graveside service and burial at Clyde, KS. Visitation is Sunday, November 1, at Buhler Mortuary from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sue is the Secretary for Allied Health and Kent is the Vice-President of Finance. Please keep the Williams and Anderson families in your thoughts and prayers. Also: A very ill Mary Leubbert is recovering in the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital after a life-threatening asthma attack. She's in room 382 through at least the weekend. No flowers if you visit. Hello Rotarians, Hope you can attend this Wednesday when we hear from Janet Frey who will be talking about infection control. Also, wanted to tell you a number of Rotarians have gone with the meal plan for meals. You can purchase the five meal plan for $40. It save you $1.25 but most of all it is more convenient since you don't have to write a check or pay each time you attend. It is a good option for people who can't attend every week. I will not be at the meeting Wednesday but Steve will fill in for me and you can give him your dues or purchase the five meal plan if you wish. Bernie

I am pleased to report that Reed was dismissed from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and is recovering at home. His health is still fragile and he will be working with therapists at home. Good Morning Rotarians, This Wednesday we will be hearing from Peggy Krause about the El Dorado Relay for Life. We will be presenting Seth Hadley with his El Dorado Rotary Scholarship check. Dear Rotarians, David Stewart reports that the tornado memorial has been refinished to all of its original glory. Please put Wednesday, June 10, 2009 on your calendar. That is the first anniversary of the memorial dedication and the 51st anniversary of the tornado. The Rotary Club will hold its weekly meeting that day at the memorial in Graham Park. We will enjoy a picnic lunch. Afterwards, we will also take a group picture in front of the memorial. That evening, Rotary will hold a short prayer service at 5:45 P.M. at the memorial. The service is open to the public. A special invitation will go out to the relatives and friends of the tornado victims. Rotarians are encouraged to attend. Steve Pershall

A beautiful Monday morning to each of you! John tells me you won't want to miss the program this Wednesday. It will be "Gangs Within the Walls" presented by the Department of Corrections. Please remember the Polio Plus Walk this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at East Park. This will be a great activity for your families. Get your kids and grand-kids and come walk with us. FREE Family picnic at noon till 1:30. Come and help support the Polio Plus Program and help eradicate polio along with having some fun with fellow Rotarians and their families. Last summer, Rotary Club heard from Christie Branugh, the State Librarian. From one of the library/system directors in the state comes this alert: State aid to local libraries faces the real possibility of sizable reductions this session. A Senate Ways and Means Subcommittee will soon consider the State Library's budget, where state aid to local libraries is funded. Now is the time to share with your Kansas legislators about how important state aid is to your library. Many libraries are experiencing increased use and growing demand for services during these difficult economic times. Reducing state aid hurts libraries just when their communities need them the most. HomeworkKansas is also in trouble. In spite of overwhelming student approval it appears HomeworkKansas will not be funded next year. Jim Goering, City Commissioner for North Newton, “Green Initiatives in North Newton”, that he presented at the 2009 Regional Energy Conference in Wichita last month. North Newton recently completed construction of a “Green City Hall” as well as some other environmentally friendly initiatives. They have promoted homeowner use of CFL's, funded greenspace tree planting (up to 75.00), and distributed 1000 canvas shopping bags in a privately funded attempt to clean up the plastic bag mess. Just a start, but it helps!

David Coryell has been recognized as the El Dorado, KS, Rotary Club's newest Paul Harris Fellow . He and his wife Pat, an artist, own and operate the “Gift Horse Farm Gallery and Gardens,” along with maintaining rental housing in El Dorado. They have 3 daughters and a son ... two educators, a library services director, and a programmer for NASA. They enjoy 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way. David A. Coryell, BSEE, MS grew up in western Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma A&M College, (now Oklahoma State University.) From college, he worked for 19 months in a copper mine in New Mexico, of which 3 months was spent with the miners on strike! Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa, Oklahoma was hiring, and during a “visit home” he got work there. After 5 years at Douglas, he worked as a computer design engineer at IBM in Endicott, New York for 15 years.
